•Mining companies report on diversity and inclusion according to GRI standards.
•Mining companies show an apparent preference for reporting on indicators which are relatively easy to obtain, such as demographics and policies.
•In mining companies’ sustainability reports there was a decline in reporting of several indicators of structural aspects of employee inclusion over the study period.
•There is ample opportunity to improve mining reporting of diversity and inclusion issues, including ethnic diversity, age diversity, and ‘invisible’ diversities.
