Shaping the Future of Mining: A Commitment to Equity and Innovation

Published: 10/02/2025

“Every person has a unique story. Each of us is shaping the future of mining.”

These words were the powerful precursor to a speech by Amparo Cornejo (Chief Sustainability Officer—Teck Resources), our 2024 International Day of Women in Mining Ambassador.

As part of our commitment to equity in the mining industry, we are sharing Amparo’s insights, previously shared during an in-person meeting for IWRMP 2024, hoping they can inspire and encourage you, as they did our mentoring cohort.

Amparo Cornejo’s insights for driving the future of the mining industry

Diversity drives innovation

“Our industry faces big challenges. We need new ideas to become more sustainable. We need diverse teams to drive innovation.”

According to a 2024 report from McKinsey, businesses with diverse representation, both in gender and ethnicity, are 39% more likely to outperform their peers financially.

At IWIM, we believe that in bringing together people from diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, we broaden our knowledge base, which can increase our ability to solve problems and lead to better decision-making.

Mentoring nurtures knowledge

“Mentoring is not just about career growth. It’s about creating a network of visionaries.”

We agree that whether mentoring or being mentored, we contribute to a better future for mining. Mentees can bring fresh ideas to our industry by questioning the status quo, and mentors impart vital knowledge and guide the next generation

“Mentors are the link between the past and future of mining.”

By investing in the power of mentoring, we are investing in the future of mining itself.

Change knows no limits

“In my current role as the IDWIM 2024 campaign ambassador, I am in a unique position. I’m not sure if I’m a mentor or a mentee. I feel a bit of both. And that’s a good thing. It’s a reminder that learning is a continuous journey, and we can all play both roles at different times.”

The future of mining hinges on our collective ability to adapt, innovate, and balance productivity with sustainability. Each of us plays a critical role in shaping this transformation.

“Remember, our most valuable resource is not only in the ground. It’s also above it, our people and our shared knowledge.”

We can all make a difference

“How will you use what you’ve learned to make a real difference in our industry?”

At IWIM, we believe it is important to reflect on how we can translate insights into meaningful action. While the path forward may have its challenges, it is also rich with opportunities to create a mining industry that is not only productive but also sustainable and diverse. By working together and embracing these possibilities, we can drive lasting change.

Each of us has the power to make a difference. Small actions such as fostering inclusion in the workplace, advocating for sustainable practices, or sharing knowledge can create positive change. True transformation happens when all individuals commit to making a difference.

All positive actions, no matter how big or small, are essential to building a thriving and equitable mining industry.

The future of mining depends on people.

“Let’s shape the future of mining with confidence and creativity, supporting each other every step of the way.”

Shaping the future of the mining industry requires a committed, collective effort. We must actively challenge the status quo, embrace innovation, and champion sustainability.

By doing so, we can ensure the mining industry evolves to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
