Global WIM Summit

Published: 18/02/2021

International Women in Mining (IWiM) is hosting the Global WIM Summit, an inaugural online gathering of Women in Mining (WIM) organisation leaders which will take place on 1 and 2 March 2021.

Why this Global WIM Summit matters
Building on the success of WIM organisations in delivering constructive initiatives and thought leadership locally, the Summit will explore opportunities to realise a common purpose on a global scale, focusing on issues of strategic importance both to women and to the mining industry.

The Global WIM Summit represents a landmark on the journey towards defining and articulating a global WIM agenda. Together, we will address the challenges that face the sector through thought-provoking workshops and collegial roundtables, all geared towards the creation of a common roadmap to success. Among the topics for discussion will be the priorities highlighted in our recent survey of WIM organisation leaders, including the need for role models and mentors for women in mining, the global paucity of data on women in mining and the urgency of attracting and retaining STEM women in mining.

The Global Summit will also include workshops with leading experts on industry stakes and challenges, relating to both large (LSM) and artisanal and small-scale (ASM) mining, as well as issues and opportunities facing WIM organisations and their leadership. Our aim is to provide WIM organisations with a unique opportunity to network, share their experience and learn from each other. By creating and strengthening contacts between WIM organisations, we can foster a culture of collaboration that will benefit women in mining everywhere. See the programme here.

The Summit will also see the completion of the work undertaken by a Founding Committee of WIM organisation leaders to form the International WIM Alliance. The official launch of the Alliance will mark the beginning of a new era of success and impact for the WIM movement. As the mining sector continues to evolve and societal expectations of diversity and inclusion increase worldwide, there is a growing need for a powerful, global WIM voice to draw attention to the outlook for women in the mining industry.

Thinking local, acting global

To better serve our global audience across all time zones, live sessions will run at different times and with the benefit of simultaneous translations in French and Spanish.
