This year’s list of 100 inspirational women in mining includes Faby Manzano, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Barrick Pueblo Viejo, and Marian Moroney, Barrick’s Senior Director of Global Exploration.

The list is produced by the UK-based non-profit organization Women in Mining, which is dedicated to promoting the employment, retention and progress of women in the mining industry.

“I joined the industry for a career with the opportunity to travel and work outdoors, and for the sense of adventure.”

“The inspirational women in the publication represent the diverse roles in the sector from truck drivers to CEOs and at all stages of career development,” says Nichole McCulloch, Chair of Women in Mining’s (UK) International Committee. “The one thing that binds all of these women together is their love and passion for the industry.”

Manzano’s innovative approach to corporate social responsibility at Barrick’s Pueblo Viejo mine in the Dominican Republic, and Moroney’s achievements in exploration, earned them spots on the list.

“I love the challenge of supporting people to grow from such a controversial industry,” says Manzano. “It’s easy to talk about the development of people from an NGO. Everyone thinks well of you. But having people understand mining’s contributions, not only to a country’s development, but to the individual and collective development of the communities, is a real challenge — a global challenge.”

Moroney’s trajectory in exploration, which spans more than two decades, is praised for her tenacity and courage.

“I joined the industry for a career with the opportunity to travel and work outdoors, and for the sense of adventure,” says Moroney. “Being paid to explore for gold is pretty awesome! I still enjoy the work and the people, and I continue to have fun and progress in my career. I also enjoy sharing my experiences with people entering this challenging industry.”

The non-profit’s executive committee and advisory board choose the winners from a pool of nominees submitted by their peers. Barrick’s Catherine Raw, Executive Vice President, Business Performance, is a member of the organization’s advisory board.

“Faby and Marian are great examples of the talent that lives in our company,” says Barrick President Kelvin Dushnisky. “We are extremely proud to have people like them contributing to the success of our organization and we congratulate them on this important recognition.”
