Equality, Diversity and A Boring Afternoon (A slice of mining)

Published: 08/06/2015

We came upon this interesting blog post written by a male mining engineer writing about his view regarding the issue of women in mining and gender equality in mining. We liked his candid approach and hope for the future.

“It was a subject that was always at the back of my mind but I didn’t sense the urgency of thinking about it deeply until one day my friend and I had a chat to ease out that one boring afternoon.

We would always share with each other our thoughts of interest when it comes to anything may it be what breaks the internet, what good anime was going to be release or reminiscing of the days when the Starks were still alive. We are huge fans of the Television series, Game of Thrones. And of course we talked a lot of the career path we chose.

My companion asked me this question out of the blue one afternoon: Gender equality, will the world truly achieve it? It gave me a feeling of a statement more than a question from the way it was stated.

But at the time I didn’t give an answer for I didn’t know what to say and I didn’t want to hurt my friend’s feelings because I may say the wrong things and it was a little awkward to be asked by that question. My companion was a she and we are both mining engineering students.

The world that she was talking about was the mining world.

Again I didn’t give an answer. I never really thought about gender equality when it comes to mining. My thoughts when it comes to mining are that we are the ones that extract God’s given riches for us to use. Gold, Silver, Copper, Nickel, Minerals, Mining methods, Mining Laws, Open pits and Underground mines Etc.

Gender equality was the last thing I was thinking about.”
