Applications open for BHP Billiton/MCA Women in Engineering Scholarship
BHP Billiton, in partnership with the Minerals Council of Australia, the national body representing Australia’s mining and minerals processing industry, invites students from across the country to apply for the BHP Billiton/Minerals Council of Australia Women in Engineering Scholarship.
The scholarship is open to all female undergraduate engineering students studying in Australia and provides $8,000 per annum for the final two years of study.
The scholarship aims is to help identify the next generation of talented female engineers and to advance the role of women in the resources sector.
In the past 15 years, the number of female minerals sector workers has increased more than fourfold, from 6,200 in August 1999 to 30,000 in August 2014. During the same period, female participation rates in the minerals workforce increased from 9 per cent to 14 per cent.
Female study choices have been identified by the industry as one of the impediments to increasing female employment in the industry along with the masculine image of the industry. These scholarships are one means by which the industry is seeking to redress these factors.
To be eligible for the Women in Engineering Scholarship, students must be enrolled in full-time study in an engineering degree (mining, environmental, electrical, mechanical etc) and have a GPA of 5 or more (equivalent to 65 per cent or higher).
Applications close 17 December 2014.
