The Lithium Resources team is responsible for overseeing our existing resources and developing new ones to enable Albemarle’s strategy to be a leader from mine to market and ensure a more sustainable future. Members of this team work across a variety of geology and engineering functions including exploration, grade control, mine planning, metallurgy/process, environmental/permitting, and economics.
The Opportunity
We are currently seeking a Lead Exploration Geologist to join our Lithium Resources team. This position will be located in Albemarle’s Perth, Western Australia offices but work closely with the Technical Services and Geology team based in North Carolina, as well as other business functions across Albemarle’s global network.
In this role, you will be responsible for geological assessment of exploration opportunities at all levels of project definition for a portfolio of growth opportunities focused in the Australia/Pacific region, as well as development of a generative exploration pipeline. Well-suited candidates should be proactive and creative in problem solving and risk definition, and be able to work independently to advance exploration interests in the region, as well as collaborate with a multi-disciplinary team to efficiently evaluate growth potential. Special consideration will be given to candidates with some experience in conventional mining project deal structures (i.e. earn-in agreements, joint ventures, etc.).
In this position you will:
  • Be responsible for all generative exploration geology activities in the APAC region conducted by Albemarle, their partners, or contractors.
  • Develop an overall exploration strategy to align with the Group Geologist’s and Albemarle’s generative resource development objectives.
  • Support the Group Geologist in project evaluation and due diligence of early or development stage projects as well as provide high-quality geological opinions or expertise to various internal and external stakeholders.
  • Research, test, and make recommendations on new products, processes, and technologies to improve exploration, increase safety, or enhance early-stage understanding various disciplines along the value chain.
About you
Education:
  • At minimum; bachelor’s degree in geology;
  • Graduate degree in economic/ore deposit geology preferred;
Experience:
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in mining for metals/non-metals, with at least 5 of this in generative exploration activities (greenfields, brownfields, resource development, etc.)
Requisite Skills/Characteristics:
  • Strong commitment to team safety and health in all facets of work. Ability to guide and refine inputs to HSE guidelines to fit with overall corporate policies.
  • Familiarity with multiple styles and methods of mineral exploration, and prior experience in exploration management.
    • Special consideration given to demonstrable experience or expertise in spodumene pegmatites, lithium clays, and/or brine deposits.
  • Self-motivated and driven to succeed, but not afraid to fail.
  • Continued professional development and technical training expected.
  • Demonstrated competence in exploration or geological model software such as Leapfrog Geo, Target, and ArcGIS.
  • Geological/geochemical/geophysical interpretive and integration skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate within a robust multidisciplinary team, as well as ability to communicate complex geological or exploration concepts to external stakeholders.
  • High level familiarity with exploration budgeting and logistical processes.
Essential Functions:

How you will spend the majority of your time:

  • Project reviews and site visits to be conducted, with up to 50% travel primarily in the APAC region with potential trips further afield.
  • Develop, coordinate, and lead exploration programs in accordance with Albemarle core values, aligned with relevant HSE standards, and within budget.
  • Work with Albemarle’s partners or contractors to execute programs in a safe and effective manner.
  • Coordinate peer reviews of exploration programs or results with joint venture or third-party stakeholders.
  • Assist in the development or refinement of advanced exploration models for lithium deposits (hard rock, clays, and brine targets).
  • Ensure the effective collection, documentation, and interpretation of exploration data, including QAQC protocols.
  • Evaluate non-geological factors in mining projects at a high level, such as; ESG, hydrogeology, hydrological conditions, geotechnical risk, geochemical risk.
  • Bring growth opportunity targets to decision points for review in a cost effective and timely manner with unequivocal geological opinions.
  • Contribution to the preparation and presentation of quarterly reviews for the Lithium Resources team.
  • Preparation or reviews of material as required for inclusion in company presentations.
  • Participate in annual budget project reviews.
