Position Summary:

The Country Manager role serves as enabling support for our businesses by proactively working with the governments and communities in Argentina to mitigate risks, advocate for a favorable regulatory environment, develop strong and sustainable relationships with the community, and leverage opportunities through government and external organizations (such as industry associations, think tanks, etc.) to support our business growth.


This role will lead the following responsibilities:

  • Represents Albemarle in Argentina and spokesperson for company. Develop open and effective relationships to grow sustainably in Argentina.
  • Strategic Vision – Collaborate with Company leadership to develop Albemarle government and community affairs strategy and messaging.
  • Government and Regulatory Affairs – Advocate for Albemarle’s interest with major legislative bodies and regulatory agencies and help craft appropriate strategies. Develop and maintain strong relationships with diplomatic and governmental policy and decision makers.
  • Actively monitor company identified risks, engage government to mitigate risk and evolve it as necessary
  • Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability – Co-develop and lead sustainability initiatives with Company leadership and craft key communications.
  • Public Communications – Partner with Corporate Communications to build Albemarle’s brand and reputation in-country across stakeholder groups.
  • Community and philanthropy – Develop strategic initiatives to promote engagement between Albemarle and local communities and partner with the ALB Foundation.
  • Compliance – Accountable for overall compliance in country: drive ethical business practices as well as compliance with laws and regulations
  • Identify talent and possible ALB leaders within the country
  • Facilitate increased communication and collaboration among GBU subunits and functional groups to: improve processes and functions in support of corporate goals and provide solutions for critical, local issues
  • Maintain a detailed understanding of country-level costs and provide recommendations to improve performance


Principle Accountabilities:

  • Development and implementation of external affairs programs to ensure successful development of the Antofalla project and social license to operate and to drive business opportunities in Argentina.
  • Understanding current regulatory and policy trends and translating the impact to the business priorities and opportunities.
  • Defining implications of regulatory and policy trends on our ability to operate.
  • Navigating through the policy and regulatory uncertainties to enable competitive advantage.
  • Development of Government Affairs and Advocacy strategies that support the GBU’s short and long-term objectives.
  • Promotion and defense of Albemarle’s reputation in Argentina.
  • Development of appropriate internal & external communication & advocacy tools on Argentinian policy and regulatory matters.
  • Coordinate the Albemarle representation at appropriate Argentinian national and local forums and represent Albemarle with Argentinian stakeholders and provincial government agencies.
  • Develop an active network of stakeholders.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • An academic Masters degree in politics, international relations, law, business, and at least 10 years relevant working experience in industry, consultancy or one of the Argentinian institutions.
  • Experience in government affairs and advocacy, regulatory/policy leadership, client management and politically savvy in enhancing the dialogue with regulatory agencies, external industry organizations and NGOs and understanding current and emerging trends.
  • Experience leading business supporting strategy development.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with key stakeholders;
  • A very good understanding of how the Argentinian institutions work as well as an in-depth knowledge of Argentinian chemicals and environmental legislation
  • Possess strong contacts with government officials and regulators within Argentina with an ability to strengthen Albemarle’s relationships to drive our business priorities.
  • Strong analytical and synthesis skills, and an ability to convert to sound implementation plans.
  • Excellent networker and communicator with good presentation and reporting skills and  an ability to influence.
  • Native speaker or fluent (written and verbal) in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working with multinational
  • Able to work in a multicultural and international environment and are a team player; and
  • Ability to travel and secure a travel visa as necessary.
