Demonstrating that diversity creates value
In a context where transformation is both necessary and complex, the positive impacts of sharing best practices are widely recognised.
IWiM acts for change by seeking to enable leaders and managers across the mining industry to make better-informed decisions on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion, challenging the status quo and increasing expectations that all industry actors realise this potential.
Our impact goal is to champion the adoption of policies grounded in research and data to empower stakeholders to make impactful decisions
This is achieved through:
- Global Campaigns focusing on sharing best practices and/or advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion, including the Inclusive Workplace Design in Mining initiative
- WIM Global Exchange: Convening policy makers quarterly to discuss topics of gender and extractives
- Advocating for granular gender disaggregated data
- Thought Leadership and Research projects, often conducted in partnership with leading organisations and policy shapers
- Collating and sharing resources in the form of best practices and reports in our Gender and Mining Library issued by various organisations pursuing similar transformation goals in extractives and/or other industrial sectors.
- Participating in multi-stakeholder initiatives focused on natural resources: EITI, IRMA, EPRM, UNECE ERMG, Women Rights & Mining, Global Battery Alliance
- Peer reviewing mining standards & frameworks, policies and position statements
The call for change: from awareness to action
Attracting and retaining people is a priority for mining, yet diverse groups remain under-represented. Retention is key and can only be achieved when the diversity and inclusion agenda is holistically included as part of the main strategy of an organisation. IWiM tirelessly raise the DEI gaps across all mining disciplines and at all levels of the value chain.
Increasingly, IWiM participates in policy work that formalises the progress of this agenda, in collaboration with many stakeholders pursuing similar transformation goals in mining and/or other industrial sectors.
