Reporting to the Principal Mine Engineer, the Senior Geotechnical Engineer provides guidance and interprets data from the monitoring program for our Red Dog Operations.

The rotation schedule is two weeks on-site, two weeks off-site with travel covered from Anchorage, Alaska.

Responsibilities:

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures
  • Work with the engineering and operations groups to ensure that mining activities progress safely and in accordance with geotechnical engineering principles
  • Lead all aspects of the mine geotechnical monitoring programs, provide support for analysis and design, and implement continuous improvement measures
  • Apply geotechnical expertise to rock slopes, waste dumps, blast vibration analysis, soil slopes and foundations, along with water retention structures
  • Ensure that mine projects are completed according to approved mid- to short-range planning, specifications, and development permits
  • Coordinate the pit wall monitoring and mapping program and connect with Geotechnical consultants supporting the operation or projects
  • Support cost control efforts by participating in annual budget preparation, supervising and analyzing costs and explaining variances
  • Lead the development of the mine geotechnical drilling programs. Maintain close communication with Engineering, Operations and Survey groups as necessary to ensure the success of drilling programs
  • Review long-, mid- and short-range plans for geotechnical hazards, data gaps and design improvements
  • Maintain mine site standard practices and procedures on geotechnical matters
  • Perform regular geotechnical inspections of mine site facilities, report on the inspections, and provide recommendations to the Integrated Production, Integrated Planning and Mine Operations execution team
  • Assist in ongoing geotechnical research. Initiate and direct special projects to expand the capabilities of the geotechnical team
  • Provide mentorship to junior Geotechnical Engineers

Qualifications:

  • A degree or equivalent experience in Geotechnical, Geological, Mining or Civil Engineering is required
  • Professional Engineering designation is preferred
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience, preferably in a mining environment
  • Proficient in all aspects of geotechnical applications to open pit mining with exposure to data analysis, site investigations, project evaluation and management
  • Sophisticated knowledge of robotic total station, radar, and slope monitoring radar systems is required
  • Strong proficiency with MS Office
  • Knowledge of infrastructure monitoring instrumentation and data analysis is preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant software is preferred (e.g., Slide, Dips and MineSight)
  • Motivated self-starter with ability to prioritize multiple ongoing projects and tasks
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess good organizational, budgeting, cost administration and project planning skills
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills are essential. Team cooperation is required, as is the ability to influence the activity of others
