Grande Côte Operations (GCO), a subsidiary of the Eramet group in Senegal, is active in the development, production and shipping of mineral sands, and more specifically Ilmenite, Zircon, Rutile and Leucoxene. Our ambition is to ensure the sustainability of mineral sands mining in Senegal by relying on committed, competent and motivated employees who are the richness of our organization.
Commercial products are transported from our Mineral Separation Plant along a 22-kilometre stretch of railway to the Mékhé railway station, where a GCO team manages transport to the port of Dakar, more than 120 km from Mékhé. Every year, over 600,000 tonnes of ilmenite and 100,000 tonnes of zircon are transported from the production site in hopper cars and watertight containers to the Senegalese capital, and on to our customers around the world.
Purpose of the position:
Our Direction is looking for a Rail Operations Manager (M/F) on a fixed term contract of 24 months renewable based in Mékhé, Senegal with a residence basis status.
The Rail Operations Manager is responsible for ensuring all Rail Operations are effectively and safely implemented within GCO, including the integration & development of rail safety improvement projects.
His/Her main tasks are:
- To represent GCO in dealings with local players and authorities,
- To organize and manage all rail activities,
- To guarantee regulatory compliance of rail operations and traction and guarantee the safety and security of rail traffic,
- To ensure the deployment of safety, environmental and energy policies across all activities,
- To initiate and lead improvement initiatives and promote operational excellence
Responsibilities:
Overall supervision of all railway activities in GCO
- Ensure all Rail Operations within GCO are conducted effectively and safely.
- Make sure all GCO assets are compliant in all respect with ERAMET requirements, local railway regulations and international standards (UIC, AAR).
Rail concession & agreements subjects
- Cultivate constructive relationships with the railway authority CFS and all railway operators.
- Follow up on concession agreement & contracts.
- Develop a network of operational and managerial contacts across the national railway sector to escalate and address any operational issues that can negatively impact GCO operations.
Rail Safety
- Ensure rail safety improvement project is well driven.
- Progressively set in place a sustainable organization to support rail safety activities.
- Make sure new measures set in place are well integrated into operations.
- Regularly audit the system to make sure the organization is robust, and the control measures are always effective and sustainable.
Planning
- Ensure long term maintenance planning of assets, overhaul operations, renewal, follow-up on major CAPEX.
- Follow up implementation on the Asset Management Framework.
- Manage and anticipate on large operational contracts and partnerships to deliver safe & efficient railway operations.
Operational excellence
- Promote operational excellence culture.
- Identify and implement processes that continually improve the efficiency of GCO operations in line with commitments: “People first”, “Act for the planet”, “Be benchmark”.
- Develop better ways of working within Operations.
- Identify opportunities to reduce cost through improvement projects.
HR
- Coach and develop the Rail Operations team.
- Lead, coach, mentor and develop senior maintenance staff.
About you :
- Diploma/ Training: Master’s degree/ MBA
- Experience: At least 10 years of relevant experience in rail operations
- Railway standards UIC, AAR
- Local railway regulations

- Fluent French
