Lita Calenzani

I started working very young in mining and at that time I was going through a divorce and had two young daughters. I took the job of Administrative Assistant by chance. It was meant for someone else and as that person did not want the job, I presented myself and there began my story with a state mining company: Centromin Peru SA. In 1997 the government privatised Centromin and it was bought by the U.S. firm Doe Run and renamed Doe Run Peru SRL.

Empecé a trabajar en minería muy joven, en ese entonces estaba en proceso de divorcio y tenía dos hijas pequeñas. Ocupe el puesto de Asistente Administrativo por casualidad, estaba destinado para otra persona y como esa persona no quería, me presente y ahí empezó toda mi historia en una empresa minera del Estado: Centromin Peru S.A. En el año 1997 el Gobierno privatizó Centromin Peru y fue comprada por The Doe Run Company en Misouri, la cual llamó Doe Run Peru SRL.

I have an exquisite experience of almost 30 years in the industry and I felt very satisfied from the moment I entered work. It was not easy to get a permanent position and I had to wait three years until they finally appointed me as a permanent member of the team because at that time it was difficult to become a state employee.

My greatest achievements are having advanced professionally in various positions. I managed to get scholarships, study grants for my daughters, and incentive bonuses for good work at the company.
My current role is as the Sales Supervisor of Concentrates and Refined Metals. It is also true that I had good teachers, bosses and coworkers and I took the opportunities that were offered to me… and I’m a good student, because every day I learn something new.

Tengo una exquisita experiencia de casi 30 años y me siento muy satisfecha desde el primer momento que ingrese a trabajar, no fue fácil quedarme como trabajadora estable, espere 3 años para que finalmente me nombraran como personal estable, en ese tiempo era muy difícil ingresar a una empresa del Estado.

Mis mayores logros son el haber avanzado profesionalmente en diversos puestos, conseguí becas de estudios, beneficios de estudios para mis hijas, beneficios que otorgaban a la trabajadora como incentivo por su buen trabajo. Actualmente me desempeño como Supervisora de Ventas de Concentrados y Metales Refinados.

También es cierto que tuve buenos profesores, Jefes y compañeros de trabajo y aproveché las oportunidades que me ofrecieron… y soy buena alumna, ya que todos los días aprendo algo más.

Times have changed. Twenty years ago in Peruvian mining firms there weren’t that many women in positions of operational and administrative management, these were mostly held by men. Thank God we have advanced and women occupy important positions within organisations.

One of my jobs was in Chartering which was mainly done by men, since they were working with various types of businesses where most of the people they dealt with were men; at the ports, customs, storage, transport companies, etc.

As an experience it was challenging because I had to get into the mentality of men and speak and act like them. I think the secret of my success was treating everyone in a friendly manner, as equals, and not expecting special treatment because I was a woman.

Los tiempos han cambiado, hasta hace 20 años casi no habían mujeres en cargos de dirección operativos y administrativos, la mayoría eran hombres. Gracias a Dios hemos avanzado y la mujer ocupa puestos muy importantes dentro de organizaciones.

Personalmente ocupe el puesto de “Chartering” el cual era solo realizado en su mayoría por hombres, ya que tenían trato con diversos tipos de empresas donde la mayoría eran hombres, los puertos, aduanas, depósitos, transportistas, etc.

Como experiencia fue un reto, ya que tuve que adecuarme a la mentalidad del hombre y hablar, actuar igual que ellos. Creo que el secreto fue tener un trato amigable y tratarlos de igual a igual, ósea no por ser mujer quería un trato especial.

Yes many, everyone from secretaries, bosses, managers and especially the unconditional support of my mother, who helped me a lot in taking care of my children while I was working often double shifts to earn more money.

My bosses saw my potential to learn and developed me, giving me different tasks and promoting me to better positions. The main message I had from them was their confidence in my work.

Si muchos, desde secretarias, Jefes, Gerentes y especialmente el apoyo incondicional de mi madre, quien me ayudó mucho en el cuidado de mis hijas, mientras trabajaba, muchas veces hacia doble turno para obtener más sueldo.

Mis jefes veían mi potencial en aprender y desarrollarme en las diferentes tareas que me daban y por ello me evaluaban muy bien y me promovían en mejores posiciones, el principal mensaje que tenia de ellos era su confianza hacia mi trabajo.

The first was when I moved from being the Assistant Manager for Sales to Chartering. Two weeks into the job while I was getting to grips learning how the systems worked and many other things, Fausto, the head of chartering and my boss, had a heart attack and had to be operated on.

In my department there were just the two of us. I was left with all the responsibility of handling the shipping of Doe Run’s exports by sea, land and air. It was a great challenge and responsibility. I stayed late at the office and worked at the weekends because I had to do everything alone.

Before exporting the metals I checked things two or three times to avoid mistakes. It was very intricate work, where there were large amounts of money involved in freight. The cargo had to arrive at its destination on time and there was no room for error. And this is how it was for almost 3 months.

When Fausto returned he spent a week reviewing all my work as he was worried that there might be a mistake. Fortunately everything went well and I even managed to get some savings in freight rates on some routes, extra benefits with maritime agencies, cost savings on exports and more.
After a few days he told me with great satisfaction: “Lita you’ve done a good job. I congratulate you!” I also received congratulations from my Area Manager. That was a big incentive for me to continue with lots of energy.

El primero fue cuando pase de Asistente de la Gerencia de Ventas a Chartering, a las dos semanas que ingrese a esa posición, estaba conociendo todo el sistema y aprendiendo muchas cosas y Fausto, el Jefe y responsable del Área tuvo un ataque cardiaco, lo tuvieron que operar del corazón de urgencia.

Sólo éramos los dos, me quede sola con toda la responsabilidad de embarcar por mar, tierra y aire toda la producción de Doe Run al exterior, fue un gran reto y responsabilidad. Me quedaba hasta tarde en la oficina y trabaja también los días sábados porque tenía que hacer todo sola.

Antes de sacar las cosas las revisaba dos o tres veces para evitar errores, era un trabajo muy delicado, donde se movía mucho dinero en los fletes, la carga debería llegar a tiempo a destino, no había espacio para el error, así estuve casi 3 meses.

Cuando Fausto regreso, reviso todo mi trabajo durante una semana, él estaba preocupado por si había un error, gracias a Dios todo salió muy bien, logre ahorro en los fletes de algunas rutas, beneficios adicionales con las agencias marítimas, ahorro de costos de exportación, etc.., pasados los días me dijo con una gran satisfacción: “Lita lo has hecho muy bien… te felicito!! Igualmente recibí la felicitación del Gerente de mi Área. Eso fue un aliciente para mí y para seguir con mucha energía.

All the challenges in sales are very important, from knowing that your immediate supervisor and your manager trust you, to knowing that your customer is satisfied with the way you’ve treated them and that they have received their material at the right time.

In my area of work every day is different, there is always something new to resolve and learn. The only thing you must have is self-confidence and the ability to find a solution at all times. There is nothing better than having your work recognised and appreciated.

Todo, los retos en las ventas son muy importante, desde saber que tu Jefe inmediato y tu Gerente confían en ti, así como saber que tu cliente está satisfecho por la forma como lo has atendido y tener su material en el momento oportuno.

En mi área que trabajo todos los días no son iguales, siempre hay algo nuevo que resolver y aprender. Lo único que se debe tener es confianza en uno mismo y buscar la solución en todo momento. No hay nada mejor que reconozcan y valoren tu trabajo.

First relax, also to travel so I can continue to get to know new places, people and customs. I think because of my character I will keep working or looking for something that I like, perhaps a job where I can support others.

Primero descansar, viajar a seguir conociendo lugares, gente y costumbres, satisfecha de todo lo que ha sido mi trabajo, las amistades que tuve y todo lo que conseguí gracias a él. Creo que por mi carácter seguiré trabajando o buscando algo que me guste, quizás un trabajo de apoyo a los demás.

I learned everything along the way and I thank God who put so many good people in my path, who have supported me and believed in my ability.

Todo lo aprendí en el camino, gracias a Dios me puso muchas personas buenas que me apoyaron y creyeron en mi capacidad.

Of course! Why not? I think it’s a dream we all have.

For me the development of women is very important in every way. Just as men discuss their ideas in different settings, women have no difficulty in doing this. I think the only difference is the way in which we communicate.

Para mí es muy importante el desarrollo de la mujer en todo sentido, así como los hombres debaten en diferentes escenarios sus ideas, las mujeres no tienen ninguna diferencia en hacerlo. Creo que la única diferencia es la forma de comunicar.

Yes of course. As times progress, women are prepared not only to share in the management or direction of things but also to run a business or a country. I think our sensitivity is a great tool at those moments when you need to solve or take decisions.

Claro que sí, así como los tiempos avanzan en todo sentido, las mujeres estamos preparadas no solo para compartir una gerencia o directorio, sino para dirigir una empresa y también un país. Creo que nuestra sensibilidad es un gran potencial al momento de resolver o tomar decisiones.

First you need to like what you do and be responsible for even the smallest details in your work – this is a great starting point. Not all days are the same in an office or mine site and even though there are days when everything turns out perfectly, there are many more days when things get complicated or go wrong and then it depends on knowing how to cope with ingenuity and good will.

En primer lugar que le guste lo que hace, ser responsable en el más mínimo detalle es un gran comienzo. No todos los días son iguales en una oficina o campamento. Hay días que nos sale todo a la perfección, pero hay muchos más días que las cosas se complican y solo depende de nosotras el saber salir adelante con nuestro ingenio y buena voluntad.

Globalisation allows us all to advance every day and compete in different scenarios. As such you meet men and women wanting to take a step forward, to learn something extra.

The better prepared you are the more opportunities you’ll have and the more likely you are to achieve your goals. In my case, I started as an administrative assistant, and had a series of positions held only by women before passing to sales of dangerous products, chartering, sales of local refined metals and exports, these positions were mostly only occupied by men.

Así es, la globalización actual nos permite avanzar cada día y por ende competir en todo momento en diferentes escenarios encuentras mujeres y hombres con deseos de dar un paso más adelante, de aprender cada día algo adicional.

Cuanto mejor preparado estas, tienes más oportunidades de lograr metas. En mi caso, empecé como Asistente Administrativa, Secretaria de Área, Secretaria de Ventas, posiciones solo para mujeres y luego pasé a ventas de productos peligrosos, chartering, ventas de metales refinados locales y del exterior, esas posiciones en su mayoría solo la ocupaban hombres.

The experience and trajectory of your work and personal life matures as you reach your goals. My satisfaction is to see my daughters perform professionally too. That is my greatest personal achievement. I feel fulfilled thanks to my work too.

La experiencia y trayectoria de tu vida laboral y personal va madurando conforme avanzas cuando llegas a tus metas. Mi satisfacción es ver a mis hijas realizadas profesionalmente también. Ese es mi mayor logro en lo personal. Estoy segura cumplí mi tarea, gracias a mi trabajo.

I like sport and I usually played in the school and office volleyball teams taking part in competitions. I was even involved in running things. It’s a family topic, in my blood. I also like to cook and I love to travel and get to know the customs of the people and cities I visit.

Me gusta el deporte, generalmente integraba el equipo de vóley de mi colegio y de mi oficina. Siempre participaba en todos los eventos, me involucraba hasta en la organización, creo que es un tema de familia, lo llevo en la sangre. La parte recreativa es el complemento del desarrollo de las personas.

Me gusta cocinar, sé que lo hago bien…. Y también me encanta viajar y conocer las costumbres de las personas y ciudades que visito.

My work has always been office-based – an important role for the interests of the company, but years ago I went to La Oroya where the refinery is located at 3,800 meters above sea level. It was really very hard work and I felt that those workers were worth a lot because the conditions were not easy. I told them: “Gentlemen, I give you my respect for your work.”

Now there are more women involved in all areas of mining and women from nearby mining communities look to support their husbands, families and get ahead. There are women accountants, engineers, social workers, secretaries, lawyers, all of whom are professional in every way.

I think women have been rising not only in positions within the company, but in the perception of what it is to work in mining. They take tough decisions and have made progress in society.

I am satisfied with my career and everything I have achieved with my work and my personal development and that of my family. I thank all my bosses and friends that I’ve met along the way and helped me move forward and be a good professional. I love my job and if I had to step back in time and choose where to work, I would choose mining again.

Una anecdota, mi labor siempre ha sido en oficinas, una labor muy importante para los intereses de la empresa, pero hace años fui al campamento de La Oroya, donde se encuentra la refinería de metales refinados, está ubicada a 3,800 msnm. El tratamiento de los metales es realmente un trabajo muy duro y sentí que esos trabajadores valían mucho, porque las condiciones no son fáciles, es un trabajo duro, sencillamente valore mucho a esas personas y les dije: “Señores mis respetos por su labor.”

Ahora las mujeres están más ligadas a ese tipo de trabajo, las mujeres de las comunidades cercanas de las minas trabajan para salir adelante, las esposas de los mineros los apoyan y ayudan. Mujeres contadoras, ingenieras, asistentes sociales, secretarias, abogadas, etc., trabajan para una mina, para una refinería para salir adelante para ayudar a su familia y porque son profesionales en todo sentido.

Particularmente pienso que las mujeres hemos ido subiendo no solo en posiciones dentro de la empresa, sino en sentimiento sobre lo que es trabajar en una minera, tomando decisiones extremas, hemos crecido y logrado avanzar ante la sociedad.

Me siento satisfecha de mi trayectoria, de todo lo que he obtenido con mi trabajo, de mi desarrollo laboral como personal y por el de mi familia. Agradezco a todos mis jefes y amigos que conocí en el camino y me ayudaron avanzar y ser una buena profesional. Amo mi trabajo, si retrocediera el tiempo y tendría que escoger donde trabajar, volvería a escoger el rubro minero-metalúrgico.
