Through necessity and because I like mining.

I am a miner to earn money and be able to keep my children. I inherited this activity from my parents and grandparents. The reality is that I work by necessity for the sustenance of my family but I also like to work and I particularly like to work here in the mine as part of the Association of Artisanal Miners of Pucacachi.

Soy Isabel Cartolin Navarro de 34 años de edad, soy madre de 4 hijos y vivo a 10 km de este lugar en el caserío Kishuar, soy minera para obtener ingresos y así mantener a mis hijos. Esta actividad la he heredado de mis padres y abuelos. Trabajo por necesidad para el sustento de mi familia, también me gusta trabajar, me gusta trabajar aquí en la mina.

My grandfathers and my parents were also miners, my father was a miner and he died under collapsed scaffolding in a cave. At that time they extracted the salt with candles and lighters, nowadays we have electric lights and lanterns and in this mine there are two women.

We work eight hours a day, starting at 8 in the morning and we leave at 5 pm in the afternoon – when there is high demand for salt we work until night and I am not afraid, because I know the work and I’ve been coming into the mine since I was a girl.

Mis abuelos y mis padres también fueron mineros, mi padre era minero y murió en el socavón aplastado en un derrumbe, en esa época extraían la sal con velas y mecheros, en la actualidad en nuestra labor tenemos luz eléctrica y linternas y en esta mina somos dos mujeres.

En esta mina trabajamos 8 horas diarias, ingresamos a las 8 de la mañana y salimos a las 5 de la tarde – cuando hay demanda de la sal trabajamos hasta de noche y no tengo miedo, pues conozco el trabajo desde niña.

Yes. In the beginning I was discriminated against by my colleagues, I felt bad. But they later understood my work and accepted me, now I am calm.

Sí. En un principio si fui discriminada por mis compañeros, yo me sentía mal. Pero ellos luego entendieron mi trabajo y me aceptaron, ahora estoy tranquila.

No – I became a miner on my own initiative. In this cooperative there are 16 partners and the work I do is the same as the men, except when it comes to lifting weight.

Yo me hice minera por iniciativa propia, ya que en esta asociación somos 16 socios y trabajo tan igual que los hombres, salvo levantar peso.

I learned here in the mine and you have to pick well to get good output with the tools. I work like the men and I always receive support from my fellow miners, to lever with the jimmy and that is always done between two or three people.

Yo aprendí aquí en la mina y tienes que picar bien para sacar una buena producción con pico, cuña y barreta. Trabajo igual que los hombres y siempre recibo apoyo de mis compañeros mineros, para desquinchar con la barreta y eso se hace siempre entre dos o tres personas.

I like picking the salt and finding it in the earth.

As a woman miner, we must feel we are good enough to work as well as men, we must not feel less than men, and it is up to us to be miners.

I like to see the fruits of my labour – chunks of salt. And I’m not afraid because I can hold the pick axe or any of the tools just as well as a man. I do not feel less than them because we work as a team and as a community.

Picar y sacar sal y seleccionar sal de tierra.

Como minera mujer, nosotras debemos sentirnos bien machas para trabajar tan igual que los hombres, no debemos sentirnos menos que los hombres, y depende de nosotras para ser mineras y me gusta sacar los trozos de sal de mi labor.

Y no tengo miedo porque puedo agarrar el pico como varón, la barreta como varón. No me siento menos porque trabajamos en equipo y en comunidad.

I want to excel in the future, to advance, each job has its pillars and safety net. Before I was a miner I did not have any money. Now, I take my children fruit and they eat and dress better.

Yo quiero sobresalir en adelante, avanzar, cada labor tiene pilares y una cámara por seguridad, es lo que hacemos. Antes de ser minera no tenía dinero. Ahora yo llevo a mis hijos frutas y se alimentan mejor, se visten mejor.

We started with a lot of fear. First we all put a contribution in of 100 soles and from there we have worked for the past ten months. This mine began to operate on June 8, 2016.

At the start we had no money, not even enough to buy a match, we only had the produce from what we had planted. We only ate those products and only bought sugar and oil.

Now we always have an income, it may not be much, but it’s enough to feed and clothe ourselves, before we did not have any money. At the beginning as we had no income I had to sell my animals and with this money I bought sugar and oil to feed us in the mine, because we still did not have any income from the sale of the salt.

Hemos empezado con mucho temor y miedo. En primer lugar pusimos un aporte de cien soles de allí trabajamos durante diez meses, esta mina empezó a funcionar el 8 de junio del 2016. A estas alturas ya no teníamos dinero, ni para comprar un fosforo, solo teníamos productos de lo que hemos sembrado, solo comíamos esos productos y solo comprábamos azúcar y aceite.

Ahora siempre tenemos ingresos económicos, no será mucho pero si alcanza para alimentarnos y vestirnos, más antes no teníamos dinero, ahora si llevo a mis hijos para alimentarlos y también pueden estudiar.

Al inicio como no teníamos ingresos tuve que vender mis animales, con el producto he comprado azúcar y aceite para alimentarnos en la mina, pues aun no teníamos ingresos económicos por la venta de la sal de piedra.

I suggest to all women: Keep going, you have to have strength and courage and be brave, do not be afraid, there are no obstacles.

Before I had nothing, now my children dress well and they eat well. Before we only had enough to survive. It is not difficult to work in a mine.

Yo sugiero a todas las mujeres: Que sigan adelante y hay que tener fuerza y valor y ser valientes, no hay que tener miedo, no hay obstáculos.

Antes yo no tenía nada, ahora mis hijos se visten bien, ahora se alimentan bien, antes solo tenía para sobrevivir. No es difícil trabajar en una mina.

Yo me siento bien con mi trabajo como minera, mis compañeros me apoyan, todos nos apoyamos, trabajamos en comunidad. Necesitamos capacitarnos y contar con una planta procesadora, ese es nuestro sueño.

I would invite all young women over the age of 18 to mine. It is not difficult to work in the mine, a woman needs to have courage, strength and the will to make it happen. I actually had nothing before. Now my life has changed. My family’s life has changed.

Yo invitaría a todas las mujeres jóvenes de 18 años para arriba, no es difícil trabajar en la mina, una mujer depende de nosotras hay que tener valor, fuerza y voluntad. Yo en realidad antes no tenía nada, esta actividad ha cambiado mi vida. Mi familia ha cambiado, mis hijos estudian comen mejor y también se visten mejor.

Benefits no, but yes economic advantages. Before my children did not study, now they study.

The mine too has improved a lot, we have electric power in the tunnels, we have a car to get the product through the tunnels.

Beneficios aun no, ventajas económicas si tiene. Antes mis hijos aun no estudiaban, ahora ellos si estudian y se alimentan mejor.

Ahora hemos mejorado bastante, contamos con energía eléctrica en los socavones, tenemos un coche para sacar el producto a través del riel.

My day starts at 4am in the morning, at that time I get up, I leave everything ready – breakfast and lunch – my daughters even though they are small help me with the housework, they also take care of my animals. I leave everything ready cooked and head off to work at the mine for an 8am start.

I want my children to be professionals. I no longer want them to be miners like me, they have to be professionals.

Mi día empieza a las 4 de la mañana, a esa hora yo me levanto, dejo todo listo (desayuno y almuerzo) mis hijas aun ellas son pequeñas, mis hijos ya son mayores. Las pequeñas ya me ayudan en los quehaceres del hogar, también cuidan mis animalitos, dejo todo listo cocinado y mi labor en la mina comienza a las 8 de la mañana.

Mis hijas están felices porque ahora puedo comprar frutas, vestidos y nos alimentamos mejor. También quiero que mis hijos sean profesionales, ya no quiero que sean mineros como yo, ellos tienen que ser profesionales.

In the association NO, nothing at all, here we work with tranquility, everyone respects each other and respects me. We all support each other and when necessary we give each other a helping hand.

En la asociación NO, nada de nada, aquí trabajamos con tranquilidad, todos nos respetamos y a mí me respetan. Todos nos apoyamos y cuando sea necesario todos nos damos la mano.

No – We have not received anything, ever from the government. We need to train, we need to equip ourselves with a processing plant. We need the NGOs to support us. We need to get more experienced in the exploitation and the commercialisation of our product and we all dream of a processing plant.

No hemos recibido nada, nunca, necesitamos capacitarnos, necesitamos equiparnos con una planta procesadora, necesitamos que las ONGs nos puedan apoyar. Necesitamos capacitarnos en la explotación y en la comercialización, todos soñamos con una planta procesadora.

There are two of us and we have the same rights and possibilities as the male miners. We work the same hours and in 15 days our approximate production is 3,000 kilos. The months with the highest demand are between June and September, during the rainy season the demand is low.

The important thing is that all the partners here support each other. There’s no envy or ego, we are like a big family.

Somos dos mujeres, y tenemos los mismos derechos y posibilidades que los varones mineros, trabajamos 8 horas diarias, en 15 días nuestra producción aproximada es de 3 mil kilos. Y los meses de mayor demanda son a partir del mes de junio hasta setiembre, en temporada de lluvias la demanda baja.

Lo importante es que todos los socios nos apoyamos, aquí no hay envidia ni egoísmo, somos como una gran familia.

Thank God I work here, I am a female miner and I have improved my life financially – now, my children feel happy, calm. I am happy with my colleagues, now I can take something to my family every day, I am no longer as before when I had no income.

Gracias a Dios, soy mujer minera y económicamente he mejorado – sobresalido, ahora mis hijos se sienten alegres, tranquilos, yo también me siento feliz con mis compañeros, ahora puedo llevar algo a mi familia todos los días, ya no soy como antes que no tenía ingresos.
