We take pleasure in inviting you to join us at our annual breakfast and first event of 2020, hosted and sponsored by Webber Wentzel on 5 February in Cape Town during the week of the Mining Indaba.
Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. The Sustainable Development Goals outline 17 social, economic and environmental goals and targets including SDG 5 on gender equality.
While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment, women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world and continue to have unequal participation and access to decision making in political, economic and public life.
In South Africa there are a number of laws, rules and regulations that encourage or require that companies ensure and accelerate the sustainable participation of women in the economy.
A PWC research report claims that South Africa’s mining sector has the best level of female representation on boards, and further that research shows a strong correlation between financial performance and the participation of women on boards.
At the same time, a McKinsey report in 2018 concluded that gender inequality in the mining industry is costing Australia in the region of $288 billion a year. These reports illuminate just how much could be gained from investing in a more gender-balanced workforce.
Join us as we explore this topic with our panellists from a legal, business, economic, NGO and academic perspective.
We hope to see you there for our panel discussion, a light breakfast and networking.
