The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank that delivers

nearly 100 countries. We are currently looking for a Consultant to work in our IGF Program.
IISD serves as the Secretariat for the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and
Sustainable Development (IGF). The IGF is a member-driven organization aimed at providing national
governments committed to leveraging mining for sustainable development the opportunity to work
collectively to achieve their goals. It is devoted to optimizing the benefits of mining to achieve poverty
reduction, inclusive growth, social development and environmental stewardship. The IGF serves as a
unique global venue for dialogue between its over 60 member country governments, mining companies,
industry associations and civil society.
This position is a short-term consultancy
The successful candidate will provide expert assistance to the IGF project “New Tech, New Deal,” (a
follow-up to the Mining a Mirage project) which will explore the impacts of new mining technologies on
employment and procurement, and the subsequent challenges for mining companies’ relationship with
host governments and communities.
He or she will administer structured interviews with a minimum of 20 subjects from mining companies
and original equipment manufacturers, garnering any information they might provide on the impacts of
new and coming mining technologies on employment, and on operational efficiency/profitability. He or
she will write up the results of the interviews in an internal report.
The consulting expert will be supported in his or her efforts by the full project team, particularly in terms
of suggestions for interview candidates, and in terms of assistance with introductions to candidates.
• At least 10 years experience in mining sector
• Familiarity with mining sector technology
• Advanced degree in relevant area, preferably engineering
• Fluency in English a must; knowledge of French, Spanish, Portuguese, an asset
• Flexibility, ability to work independently to a deadline
Terms of Consultancy:
The consulting expert will provide three weeks’ equivalent of work between October 31, 2018 and
March 31, 2019. Consultant’s daily rate will depend on qualifications, experience and location.
Location: Home office. IISD will not be applying for residency and work permits for this position on
behalf of the applicant.
