THE ‘E’ IN ESG FOR MINING: TOWARD A SUSTAINABLE MINING
ESG continue to be the key source of opportunities and risk for mining and metals industries in 2023. The “E” factor considers how a business utilizes natural resources, such as water, as well as the effects of its activities on the environment and the communities it works in. The mining process is still aggressive and intrusive, and activities frequently have a significant negative environmental impact on both the immediate area and the global ecosystem. Despite strict regulation and considerable efforts by mining corporations and the government to build forward-thinking and sustainable initiatives, “current industry practice is characterised by inconsistent legal compliance and reflects concerning legislative gaps” .
With this in mind, Intelligence Transfer Centre is hosting the Annual Conference titled ”The E in ESG for Mining” on 17 & 18 May 2023 at CSIR, Pretoria.
The aim of the conference is to explore and address environmental challenges faced by the mining industry with a focus on compliance, enforcement and prosecution. Representatives from governmental authorities, environmental law enforcement agencies and leading experts will provide meaningful insights and emerging trends and responses to environmental risk assessment. The conference will also focus on reporting with practical implementations and recommended policies.
