Join us for an exciting opportunity to get together to understand how the actions and aspirations of the recently launched Women in STEM Decadal Plan are relevant and apply to all the facets of a Goldfields community. Together we will explore the Plan’s pathways of ‘attract, retain and progress’ and their perspectives for collaborated and improved Goldfields community outcomes.

This event will be expertly led by Australia’s Inaugural Women in STEM Ambassador – Professor Lisa Harvey-Smith. Lisa recently announced, “After 15 years of conducting research into the mysteries of the universe and developing some of the world’s most technologically advanced astrophysical observatories I am now taking on a new challenge: to help smash barriers to inclusion in STEM and to create a stronger, more inclusive STEM sector fit to drive Australia’s economic success in the coming decades.”

The Event

Mining towns and in particular Kalgoorlie are the heart beat of Australia’s resources industry. Human energy drives and supports the operations of these mines. Mining towns are the source of quality people who can competently support these operations. For the 21st – 22nd century these mines require diversely talented STEM people to design, operate, manage and problem solve the variety of systems required to successfully lead the multitude of mine sites throughout Western Australia.

Successful mines are supported by successful and happy communities. From these communities we need to attract STEM individuals and, together with the community and its industry partners we need to collaborate to retain and progress its workforce. At this forum, the community, family, industry and STEM careers will be integrated to evaluate how improvements along the WiSDP vision can be implemented for all stakeholders. It will encompass a broad spectrum; from child care, STEM learning in schools, to positive STEM pathways into Goldfields tertiary-based mining preparation, and diversity in mining careers.

The forum will start with the Kent Street SHS Year 8 CoRE class, showcasing how contextually set, resources aware STEM learning is a positive foundation to STEM career pathways into the mining industry. This will be followed by an introduction and then a discussion led by Lisa. The discussion will include a diverse panel will consist of individuals from the Goldfields community, education and industry. These panelists are Kalgoorlie leaders, mining graduates, mid-career operators, technicians and professional employees and STEM elders. The discussion will revolve around community and industry leadership and action, work place culture and education.

This is an interactive session, so we encourage you to please submit questions you’d like to ask Lisa on the night to: suzy@corefoundation.com.au
